the Heart of Preparing

It’s still a little early to plant tomatoes here, but there are plenty of areas that are getting their tomato plants started. Regardless, if you are in the planting stage or in the preparing stage here are 5 helpful tips to grow Terrific Tomatoes this growing season

1) Don’t pick the flowering plants: If you purchase your tomato plants from a local greenhouse or store don’t pick the flowering plants. As much as it might seem like you are getting a head start by purchasing the plants that are already flowering it’s actually not. You want a good root start before you want the flower, so try to find those that have a good root system, look for strong healthy stems.

2) Pick the perfect sunning spot: When planning out your gardening plot pick a planting spot for your tomatoes that has plenty of direct sunlight. The sunniest garden spots make for the sweetest tomato spots. If you can get 7-8 hours of sunshine your tomatoes will soak in the sun as much as they soak in the water. I always think of bright red tomatoes and remember they ‘like’ a little sunburned face.

3) Aim for thriving soil: If you want your tomatoes to thrive, you want the soil to be thriving as well. I remember grandpa used to say the darker the soil the richer the content. I don’t have Grandpa’s green thumb, but I do know that if my dirt is too white the tomatoes won’t thrive. If you are uncertain about the richness of your soil, a soil tester from a local garden center or your local Cooperative Extension Service will give you a soil analysis and determine the pH of your soil. Aim for a pH of 6.5 to 6.8 for your tomatoes.

4) Plant seedlings deep in the ground: Tomatoes are a heavy plant, especially once they start to bear their fruit. Ensure that you have a good healthy root system. By planting your seedlings deeply into the ground you will give them a good root base and provide for a stronger plant. Roots will often form along the stem sections giving a stronger, more stable root base and beautifully healthy plants.

5) Rough them up: This is pure advice handed down from generation to generation. My husband and I were leery, but we gave it a try and it worked. A wise old owl told us that tomato plants thrive and produce better fruit if you have roughed them up a bit. This wise old owl tramples the plants gently to give them a little stress. Don’t abuse your plants, but give them a little tough love and see if they grow stronger and produce a terrific fruit.

It is my hope that this Tomato season will find your crop plentiful, your hands dirty and your heart full.
