Hi, I’m Heather. Thank you for stopping by.  I am a mom of 4 wonderful children, wife to an avid outdoorsman, and our lives are CRAZY, to say the least. I’m the creator behind Mom Economics and The Heart of Preparing.

My husband and I love spending time in the outdoors. We love upland game hunting and take extra care to teach our children all about fair chase, ethical hunting as well as safety first. Last fall we had the opportunity to go to a pheasant ranch to take our children out and teach them how to flush birds and just enjoy the day together. Our family loves to spend time in the great outdoors and we love a good adventure. We love exploring the outdoors and I love photography of our beautiful earth.

In 2014 we started building our home on our own. We spent 18 months “living small” in a 23 foot camp trailer while we were building our home. We purchased a kit home so the foundation was hired out.  Then, they brought the frame work and interior framing in and basically put the big puzzle piece together.  The company we purchased the kit from completed the exterior of the home and we have been doing the rest.

All our extra time, if there is any, is still spent making this house our home.  We have learned a lot about ourselves, our skills and abilities as well as the level of our patience.

I love to bake, so of course, I’ll share my favorite family recipes with you. I love to cook like Grandma, and, it is because of her that I learned a lot of valuable lessons in my life. I also love to garden, it’s a big kids way to play in the dirt and I enjoy preserving my home grown foods, these loves came from my grandma with a little help from my dad.

Lucky for me, I also married an excellent cook. Together we like to create meals and try new recipes with a little tweak to our liking.

I grew up in a family that made do with what we had, I learned valuable lessons in my youth about working hard for what you love, and cherishing what you have been given. At the age of 12 my dad was in an accident that broke the discs in his back and herniated the discs in his neck. One disc away from being completely paralyzed, it fell on my brother and I to take over and do the things that my dad could no longer do. Those challenges build our character and teach us the true purpose of our journey, it is through experience and hardship that I learned to become who I am today, and I am thankful for that lesson learned in my youth.

In the lessons I’ve learned through my journey of life, I’ve learned to appreciate and embrace the present, work and plan for the future and discover joy within yourself. Teach your children the lessons that will shape them for the future, and build a home of love, laughter, peace and joy. The kind that the rest of the world will envy.

My favorite quote, which I have hanging in my office reads: The most important work you will ever do is within the walls of your own home. ~Harold B Lee
