It was so loud, it woke me and I jumped out of bed! The thunder struck and the lightning crackled and then I heard the rain as if it was coming down in sheets hitting the metal roof. I looked at the clock and realized I still had a good 30 minutes until I had to get moving. My room was cool, so I cracked open the door and just laid in bed listening to the storm.
I have always loved rainstorms, and when we get into September and it rains it is so refreshing knowing that it is a good sign that fall is on its way.
I’m a little late this month getting to my weather lore. School started and my kids all brought home a different germ, so we’ve been fighting sickness in our home.
Nonetheless, I am excited to share some fun weather lore with you for September. I love September because it is the ending of the hot summer days and the beginning of the signs of fall. Spring is by far my favorite season because of the new life all around, but Fall is a close second. I love watching the leaves change to the beautiful reds and oranges. I love the crispness in the air and the ability to begin to see the fruits of our summer labors as harvest time approaches.
If you are new to my monthly weather lore posts, welcome! A lore is “The body of knowledge, especially of a tradition, anecdotal, or popular subject, typically passed from person to person by word of mouth.” For me, it is something fun, a way to share my love for nature and all I have gathered and learned in my life.
September
By Helen Hunt Jackson
The goldenrod is yellow;
The corn is turning brown;
The trees in apple orchards
With fruit are bending down.
The gentian’s bluest fringes
Are curling in the sun;
In dusky pods, the milkweed
Its hidden silk has spun.
The sedges flaunt their harvest
In every meadow-nook;
And aster by the brookside
Make asters in the brook.
From dewy lanes at morning
The grapes’ sweet odors rise;
At noon the roads all flutter
With yellow butterflies.
By all these lovely tokens
September days are here,
With summer’s best of weather,
And autumn’s best of cheer.
I thought this poem was a good indication of my thoughts about September.
Now, without further ado, here are our 5 folklore for the month, do they fit your season?
- Fair weather on the first of September means fair weather for the rest of September.
- Take a look at the wooly worm, the black bands warn of the winter storms. If rusty orange in color they are, winter alas will do no harm.
- If on the 19th day of September a storm rolls in from the south, a mild winter may be expected and be prepared for a drought.
- The three days of September 21, 23 and 24 rule the weather for October, November, and December.
- When bushy-tailed squirrels gather nuts in a flurry, winter weather will come in a hurry.
I’d love to hear about the weather in your little corners of the world. Thanks for stopping by and may your fall be filled with cheer!
~Heather
