For today’s #thriftythursday tip I thought we would talk about Halloween candy. If you are like me, you probably bought a bag and now it’s 1/2 gone, or almost empty so it’s time to buy again. Consider these 5 tips before you run out to the store:
- Look for coupons in your Sunday paper. With candy companies in competition, there are several coupons that when paired with sales in-store, you can save a few dollars. Last-minute can save you some money too, have you noticed the stores are stocking for Christmas? The Halloween candy is generally discounted and you can still use that coupon.
- Check the regular candy aisle. That coupon might be for $1.00 off when you buy any two bags of a certain brand. It doesn’t have to be the Halloween bag though. A regular bag of candy without the Halloween packaging is often a little cheaper, thus saving you more than just the $1.00 off coupon. Do you really think the kids care if their candy is wrapped to look like a pumpkin or ghost? Nope, they go for what’s inside 😉
- Buy in bulk at wholesale clubs and discount stores. They usually offer a big bulk bag for less than the cost of 2 or 3 smaller bags with the same # items. Consider checking your per-item cost to see where you’ll save the most. (*Hint: to find your per-item cost divide the cost of the bag by the number of pieces it contains)
- Consider something other than candy. Check the dollar store for Halloween party favors like pencils, trinkets, and stickers. Try the regular party favor isle too, you might be surprised what you find that could be a fun change.
- Consider coupons for local fast-food chains. For $1.00 you can usually get 5 to 10 coupons good for a FREE small cone or shake.
HAVE A FUN AND SAFE HALLOWEEN!
